Sports Nutrition & Performance
When an athlete reaches high level sporting performance, they need to be in the best shape possible to be ahead of their competition. Therefore, the fuel that goes into their body is crucial. A good way to imagine this is like a race car, you can have the best driver and the best car, but put poor quality fuel into it, the engine's performance is compromised. It's the same as an athlete may train hard and have a great coach, but they need to be eating the right foods at the right times otherwise performance is affected.
Depending on the sport, athletes have different goals and different needs, whether it's to gain muscle, lose weight, fuel themselves for endurance events or just to recover, they need to know when to eat and what to eat.
Poor nutritional intake contributes to lowered performance, injury and adverse health outcomes.
If you're looking to optimize your nutrition to continue improving your functional nutrition for sports, I have a profound interest and significant experience working with high level athletes in combat sports, body building, endurance and power sports. Through a specific program guide, Shelby will work with you to build your sporting career.
Hormone Health
Our nutrition and what we eat has profound effects on our hormones, especially during perimenopause (before menopause), menopause, pregnancy, and everyday hormone health. Nutrition can also affect how we enter into these stages of our life. Food has been shown to affect the production and secretion of hormones by directly acting on the gut, by nervous reflexes, through changes in the concentration of various metabolites in the blood, or secondary to changes in the hormones in our gut.
During these life cycles of hormones, our oestrogen rises and our progesterone drops, creating imbalances, and these imbalances affect our metabolic function, leading to increased risks of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, weight gain and mood changes.
A specialised and nutrient dense diet can support and improve these risk factors significantly and have you back to enjoying a high quality life.
If you're struggling with fatigue, mood changes, weight and other challenges related to hormones whether you're male or female, I can work with you find a way that works for you, keeps it simple and optimizes your quality of life.

Gut Health
Gut health has been in the spotlight for sometime now and we are still learning about the vast array of affects an unhealthy microbiome has on not only our physical health but also our mental wellbeing.
A poor gut microbiome may be more prevalent in certain individuals such as those who suffer with IBS, leaky gut and chronic bloating, or more subtle in those who may experience anxiety and depression, or discomfort, irregular bowel movements and intolerances.
When we consume foods that don't support a balanced environment, it creates an inflammatory reaction, just like when bacteria gets into a cut, it gets infected and the inflammation is there to increase the rate of white blood cells to the area to remove the foreign invader. This is what happens in our gut when put in foods that create inflammation. When inflammation is present the functioning of the gut is reduced and nutrient and neurotransmitter absorption is compromised.
Specific nutritional plans can be tailored to individuals dependent on their symptoms to reduce inflammation, heal the gut and rebalance the microbiome to improve your discomfort and help you start enjoying a satisfying quality of life.
If you're suffering with gut related issues or discomfort, it doesn't have the stay that way. I can work with you to reset and heal your gut through a specific and guided program to create and maintain a healthy microbiome.
Weight Loss & Management
For the most part, nutritional weight loss can be simple once you know where to start and once you get your mind into the right space. This period of time can be overwhelming and scary, but having someone there with you every step of the way can makes things simpler for you and reassure you that you are on the right track.
For health reasons it's crucial to maintain a healthy weight for your individual body to reduce the risks of developing chronic health conditions such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, or even certain cancers.
Nutrition goes hand in hand with losing and managing your weight and needs to be tailored and specific to each individual as nutrition is not a one size fits all. It's unique to each person.
If you're looking to manage your weight, or lose a little for health reasons, it's always important to talk to a professional so they can guide you and ensure you consume a diet that is balanced and rich in all the macro and micronutrients that your body needs.
In my program I show you how to first set your goal, reset your mind, reset your cravings and smoothly transition into a phase of healthy and safe weight loss. From there we move into maintenance to guide you in continuing a newfound, healthy lifestyle that fits you!

Nutrition for Mental Health
A very new area of study that has spotlighted itself recently is the interactions of nutrition on certain mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression and ADD/ADHD. Nutrition is a powerful tool when it comes to healing our physical body and that is very well documented, however this emerging area of interest is showing very promising results for supporting and improving our mental health as well.
95% of our serotonin is actually produced in our gut, responsible for mood stabilization, sleep, emotional well-being, appetite and cognitive function. Abnormalities in serotonin levels are associated with mood disorders like anxiety and depression. While over 50% of dopamine is also produced in our gut which is responsible for movement, memory, pleasure and reward/motivation, behavior and attention, meaning gut problems can contribute to a decline in mental capacity. ADD/ADHD sufferers tend to have a higher number of dopamine receptors in their brains which remove dopamine from the brain, if we are losing 50% of our dopamine in our gut due to inflammation or other health problems then we are creating a deficiency in our brain, amplifying these symptoms further.
This highlights the importance of ensuring we support our gut health with good nutrition to ensure we can support our mental functioning. This can be done by drilling down to the root of the problem and working out the cause. If you are suffering poor gut health and mental health conditions, a nutritional plan may be beneficial in helping to alleviate these symptoms through reducing inflammation and allowing your body's natural processes to take over once again and run at full capacity.
If you're looking to find a natural way to support and improve your mental health, I can work with you to drill down by analyzing your nutritional data, physical and mental health history and develop a plan to support you on your path to a healthier, happier, more functional you!
Food Relationship Coaching
Sometimes our relationship with people is hard enough, let along understanding our subconscious relationship with food. This topic can be very confusing, difficult to navigate and get in the way of achieving your goals. Our relationships with food tend to come from influences in our environment such as our culture, evolutionary, social, family, individual preferences, economic status and psychological behaviors.
Have you ever had a stressful day at work, or a fight with your significant other and just found yourself raiding the cupboard for anything that wasn't fruit or vegetables? We all have, and even those who show themselves as having the perfect diet, have had those days. This comes from our environment and outside influences that overwhelm us when we're tired, exhausted or run down. We are so hard on ourselves when we apparently "slip up," but we can overcome and learn how to be easier on ourselves and learn to let food help us in a positive way, particularly during times of stress.
If you're wanting to improve your relationship with food, stop the guilt and binging then Shelby can work with you to understand yourself more when it comes to food through guided sessions.
